James,
Records of the decade? How am I supposed to make that list when I was just about to be a teenager in the year 2000? Music's impact didn't start to effect me until close to half way through the decade.
I made this list because it's fun. These are not in any way what I think are the best, most important, or ground breaking albums of the past decade. However, I do know these albums have opened my eyes up, shifted my taste, led to me wanting to play music, helped me understand what I look for, and just completely enjoy sounds.
Some of these albums were "life savers" and my best friends through the clutter of being a teenager. One of them 'is' the most important album to date in my life. Some of them are listed for only nostalgic reasons now. Some are on for many personal reasons. Some of the albums are my favorite albums of all time. Some have helped me stop being afraid of the reasons for why I do love songs...whether it's the charm in simplicity, the quirky and painful truth in delivery, the attempt at telling a story with rock music, the wonderful connection of sounds to amazing words, or In Rainbows.
Here's mine:
1) Switchfoot -Nothing is Sound-
2) Underoath -Define the Great Line-
3) Motion City Soundtrack -Commit this to memory-
4) Death Cab for Cutie -Transatlanticism-
5) Copeland -Eat, Sleep, Repeat-
6) Radiohead -In Rainbows-
7) Coheed and Cambria -In keeping secrets of silent earth: 3
8) Death cab for cutie -Plans-
9) Taylor Swift -Fearless-
10) Guster -Keep it together-
So Close:
Relient K -The anatomy of tongue in cheek-
Manchester Orchestra -Mean everything to nothing
John Mayer -Any given thursday-
Mae -The everglow-
Bright Eyes -I'm wide awake it's morning-

Only thing I'm surprised about is the lack of Continuum. But, most of these make sense for your list to me! :)
I'm just glad that Coheed made it! haha
